NUTC Sandhouse Group presents: "Representations of Railroading" w/ Scott Lothes

Speaker: Scott Lothes, president and executive director of the Center for Railroad Photography &; Art and editor of its journal, Railroad Heritage.

As one of the world¹s most transformative technologies, railroads are frequent subjects of all forms of art. Beginning with the first paintings of steam locomotives from the 1820s and moving all the way through to digital photographs of today¹s trains, we will consider the long relationship between railroads and visual media. Featured works will include highlights from the collections of the Center for Railroad Photography &; Art, whose mission is to preserve and present significant images of railroading. The late Aaron Gellman, former director of the Northwestern Transportation Center, was a longtime member of the Center and regular attendee of its annual conference at Lake Forest College.

Bio: Scott Lothes is president and executive director of the Center for Railroad Photography &; Art and editor of its journal, Railroad Heritage.
An accomplished freelance photographer and author, he has published more than 300 photographs and 50 articles in books and magazines including Trains and Railroad History. He grew up watching coal trains in West Virginia and received a B.S. degree from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. He and his wife Maureen reside in Madison, Wisconsin

NUTC & CMAP present: #ONTO2050 Big Ideas Forum

Have we reached peak driving? Planning for future travel in the Chicago region

After a half-century of increases in car ownership, solo auto commuting, and roadway congestion across the Chicago region, the last decade has seen auto use stall or decline according to most measures. Have we truly passed “peak driving,” or did recent economic conditions merely hit the pause button? CMAP and the Northwestern University Transportation Center invite you to a panel in which transportation experts will discuss this question and its implications for planning, policy, and infrastructure decisions through 2050.
