The Telemobility University Transportation Center (UTC), a partnership of Northwestern, UC Berkeley, and UT Austin, is pleased to announce the fourth in a series of Telemobility Virtual Roundtables (TVR) aimed at understanding the supply side of tele-activities and e-processes, and their impact on the demand for travel and mobility.
The tremendous growth of e-commerce and omnichannel retail options available to consumers, as well as the COVID-19 lockdown, has led to the doubling of e-commerce purchases during the last year. COVID-19 accelerated retail innovation at both online only and brick and mortar retailers with growing online visibility. Both have been rapidly developing e-fulfillment systems, including new distribution centers and warehouses, in-store fulfillment centers, and in-store, pickup and delivery options. The extent of a shift to online purchasing, new options for goods delivery or pickup, and the resulting experience and satisfaction with these services, will likely determine the future adoption of e-commerce transactions by new customer segments. The objective of this webinar is for transportation and mobility professionals to engage in a conversation with e-commerce retail experts to better understand likely developments in omnichannel retail, and how these might impact travel and transportation demand.

Abstract
The transportation sector is a significant contributor to global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, accounting for 29% of the U.S.'s total in 2021. The significant share highlights the potential of emission reduction and the need for effective strategies. However, the mitigation of GHG emissions in the transportation sector not only relates to direct emission reduction of vehicle operations but also requires efforts to design and optimize the downstream sectors such as the infrastructure system and the energy generation. This requires a systematic approach to keep track of tremendous design alternatives and their interactions.
In this presentation, I will introduce a framework that supports the sustainable design of large-scale projects, such as road construction or vehicle electrification. By integrating economic input-output models within optimization frameworks, the developed tool can evaluate the life cycle impacts of these projects with various design alternatives, thereby aiding in informed decision-making. It is designed to be flexible, accommodating new scenarios with ease and efficiency. Furthermore, I will introduce an extended framework that incorporates time dynamics into this planning process. This enhancement not only provides a new understanding of the life cycle impacts but also enables us to plot a pathway towards the goal of net-zero emissions within the foreseeable future.
Bio

NUTC Executive Education: Freight Transportation & Logistics: Delivering Results in a Complex Environment
Northwestern University Transportation Center
8:00 AM
//
Ruan Conference Center, Chambers Hall
Details
Over the last couple of years, the global logistics community has managed challenges across the first, middle, and final mile. The ongoing global turbulence associated with war-related and lingering Covid-19 disruptions in the supply of various commodities, labor recruitment challenges, and inflation have continued to pressure supply chains and increase volatility on both the demand and supply sides. Economic uncertainty for the feasible future will continue to impact the freight transportation system across every mode and across all geographies. In this essential three-day Executive Education program, Northwestern faculty and industry experts will provide fundamental knowledge and practical insights for managing through these challenges and beyond.
NUTC’s Executive Education Freight Transportation & Logistics program has a proven track record of delivering current and forward-looking insight and actionable knowledge into North American and global transportation and supply chains. From domestic transportation (intermodal, parcel and last mile delivery, rail, third-party logistics, trucking), to international (air cargo, ocean shipping, ports), the three-day program provides unmatched insight into how freight moves. Attendees receive a first-hand look at logistics, and supply chain trends, while learning to leverage freight management technology and data analytics in order to enhance efficiency and ensure resilience within their respective organization.
Program content is thoroughly integrated by instructors, to ensure participants gain a comprehensive understanding and unique perspective of both domestic and international transportation sectors. Program content is interactive, providing numerous networking opportunities and in-depth discussions with faculty and fellow attendees. Prior knowledge and experience in logistics, transportation and supply chain management will benefit attendees, but is not a prerequisite. This year's course is specifically designed for early- to mid-level transportation managers, at both carriers and shippers, seeking to deepen their overall knowledge of the freight transportation ecosystem.
