Abstract:
In recent years, shared mobility service (SMoS) systems have emerged as a driving force behind transportation innovations. By better leveraging existing transportation facilities and resources through collaborative usage, SMoS systems promise to enhance accessibility, promote sustainability, and reduce transportation costs. Effective resource sharing requires not only compatible business models and sensible policy initiatives, but also analytical and computational tools that support design and operational decisions. At present, however, these institutional and technological apparatus remain in their infancy. The rise and fall of dockless bike-sharing in China offered a cautionary tale of the delicacy and complexity in SMoS systems, as well as the peril of leaving their development completely to unregulated markets. Partly inspired by this saga, in this presentation, I will address two design and regulation questions – why the market fails at its early stage and how the governor can regulate the market to make it sustainable – through developing and analyzing a stylized model.
Bio:
Hongyu Zheng is a Ph.D. candidate in Transportation System Analysis and Planning at Northwestern University, advised by Prof. Yu (Marco) Nie. Prior to joining Northwestern, Hongyu obtained an M.S. degree with honor in Transportation and a B.E. degree in Civil Engineering, both from Zhejiang University (ZJU). Hongyu was awarded the National Scholarship multiple times throughout his time at ZJU. Recently, he received the Bob Camillone Memorial Scholarship from ASCE Transportation & Development Institute, as well as the Transportation Center Dissertation Year Fellowship from Northwestern University. Hongyu’s research focuses on shared mobility, transportation automation, and electrification. Drawing tools and knowledge from transportation science, game theory, operations research, and machine learning, he aims to build an efficient, sustainable, and equitable urban transportation system that benefits everyone.

Abstract:
In recent years, wireless communication, onboard computation facilities, and advanced sensor techniques have enabled a well-connected and data-rich transportation system, i.e., connected vehicle systems (CVS). Even though the CVS has been granted a great potential to smartly route travelers (or CVs) to avoid traffic congestion, scholars have recognized that as the majority of vehicles become CVs, current real-time information provision and routing methods may worsen traffic congestion, given each CV still selfishly and independently chooses its own shortest path (independent routing). This inherent deficiency of the current routing methods is rooted in the inconsistency between system performance and individual vehicles' route choice behavior. Motivated by this view, our studies have introduced a novel Coordinated In-Vehicle Routing Mechanism (CRM), which used various game theories to coordinate CVs' routing decisions en route to address the overreaction phenomenon and the associated flash crowds. Drawing upon the foundational seed model, our research delved deeper into the development of information perturbation-aided CRM (IP-CRM) and correlated game-based CRM (CeRM), which strategically alter traffic information provision (travel time or route choice preferences) to CVs for mitigating network-wide congestion. Our investigations embraced a multidisciplinary approach, including computer simulation, machine learning, distributed optimization, and gradient coding schemes, to identify optimal information perturbation schemes, recommend optimal route choice preferences, tackle scalability challenges, and enhance the robustness of the CRMs against communication failures. Numerical experiments built upon the Sioux Falls network validated and confirmed the merits of our approaches.
Bio:
Dr. Lili Du is currently working as an NRC renowned Research Associate at the Federal Highway Administration-Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center, and she is also a Professor in the Civil and Coastal Engineering Department, University of Florida. She received her Ph.D. degree in Decision Sciences and Engineering Systems with a minor in Operations Research and Statistics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 2008. Dr. Du's research is characterized by integrating operations research, network modeling, game theory, control theory, AI, and statistical methods into traffic flow analysis, transportation system analysis, urban planning, and network modeling. Her current research mainly focuses on the impacts of connected and/or autonomous vehicles and electric vehicles, mobility on demand, smart curb, network resilience, and traffic flow analysis. Dr. Du's research has been published in Transportation Research Part B, Part C, and Part D, IEEE Transactions on ITS, Networks, and Spatial Economics. Her research has been funded by NSF, State DOTs, STRIDE UTC, FMRI UTC, and Toyota InfoTechnology Center. Dr. Du was a recipient of the NSF CAREER award in 2016. Her project, "Driverless City" won the First Nayar Prize at IIT. She is the founding and active chair of both TRB AEP40-4 subcommittee on Emerging Technologies in Network Modeling and ASCE-T&DI Artificial Intelligence in Transportation Committee. She serves as an editor for Transportation Research Part B: Methodological and an associate editor for IEEE Transactions on Intelligent Transportation Systems, Journal of Intelligent Transportation Systems.

Abstract
The transportation sector is a significant contributor to global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, accounting for 29% of the U.S.'s total in 2021. The significant share highlights the potential of emission reduction and the need for effective strategies. However, the mitigation of GHG emissions in the transportation sector not only relates to direct emission reduction of vehicle operations but also requires efforts to design and optimize the downstream sectors such as the infrastructure system and the energy generation. This requires a systematic approach to keep track of tremendous design alternatives and their interactions.
In this presentation, I will introduce a framework that supports the sustainable design of large-scale projects, such as road construction or vehicle electrification. By integrating economic input-output models within optimization frameworks, the developed tool can evaluate the life cycle impacts of these projects with various design alternatives, thereby aiding in informed decision-making. It is designed to be flexible, accommodating new scenarios with ease and efficiency. Furthermore, I will introduce an extended framework that incorporates time dynamics into this planning process. This enhancement not only provides a new understanding of the life cycle impacts but also enables us to plot a pathway towards the goal of net-zero emissions within the foreseeable future.
Bio
Jing Yu is currently a Ph.D. candidate in Civil and Environmental Engineering at Northwestern University, advised by Prof. Pablo L. Durango-Cohen. Before joining Northwestern, she obtained her B.S. degree in Aviation Engineering from Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics. Her research focuses on the life cycle assessment and environmental design of transportation systems. She was awarded the Transportation Center Dissertation Year Fellowship for the academic year 2023-2024.
