Northwestern University Transportation Center

Programs

Other Transportation Center Programs

In addition to academic programs, the Center offers and participates in a number of other types of programs:

The Annual William A. Patterson Lecture

For over 20 years, the annual William A. Patterson Lecture has brought to campus each April an eminent leader on the transportation world.

Business Advisory Committee Meetings

The Center's Business Advisory Committee meets semi-annually, in October and April, to hear speakers and to engage in discussions about a wide range of transportation-related topics.

Sandhouse Gang

The Transportation Center at Northwestern sponsors an informal monthly forum on rail and freight issues, many focused on the Chicago area. The "Sandhouse Gang" (the historical railroad location where rail crews and others would gather to exchange news) includes active and retired railroaders, state and local government personnel, consultants, academics, and and transportaion professionals from other non-governmental organizations.

The monthly meetings of the Sandhouse Gang have quickly become a popular local focus for discussion of emerging rail infrastruture programs. Meetings typically feature a guest speaker; see the calendar for details.

Icarus Society

Northwestern University's Transportation Center's new ad-hoc aviation think tank, The Icarus Society, will provide a public platform to industry strategists to share knowledge and ideas about all things relevant to aviation today with the widest possible audience.

Other Executive Education

The Center sponsors a variety of industry-related educational programs. For example, in 2003 the Center organized a "track" for the annual Council of Logistics Management meeting entitled "Great Transportation Debates." In October 2004, the Center offered an international conference on rail industry structure.

Over many years, the Center has offered various types of executive education programs aton-campus and off-campus locations. Topics have included the following:

Pipeline Economics and Management

Strategic Managment for Fixed Base Operators

Railroad Labor Relations

Supply Chain Marketing Strategies

Information Technology for Supply Chain Managers

Logistics/Distribution Management

Advanced Transportaion Management
