Donald Schneider started with Schneider National during his high school years, first as a mechanic's helper in the shop and then as a driver through high school and while attending St. Norbert College in DePere, WI. He graduated from St. Norbert College in 1957. He spent two years, after an ROTC Program at St. Norbert's, in the Field Artillery and then received his MBA from the University of Pennsylvania, Wharton School of Business in 1961.

Schneider is chairman of the Business Advisory Committee for Northwestern University's Transportation Center and is a member of the Advisory Board for the Kellogg Graduate School of Management; is a member of the board and executive committee of the Green Bay Packers Football Team and a former director of the Federal Reserve Board. He serves on the boards of Franklin Electric, Bluffton, IN; St. Norbert College, DePere, WI.
