William ("Gus") Pagonis

William (Gus) Pagonis was named Senior Vice President of Logistics for Sears Merchandise group in November 1993. He is responsible for all Sears' logistics functions including inventory management, vendor relations, transportation, distribution, and delivery services.

Prior to assuming his position at Sears, Mr. Pagonis spent 29 years in the U.S. Army. His last assignment was as Commanding General, 21st Theater Army Area Command, U.S. Army Europe. Prior to that he was Commanding General, 22nd Support Command, Saudi Arabia, responsible for all logistical operations during Desert Shield/Desert Storm. He deems his proudest moment "the flawless execution of the logistical portion of the Gulf War" for which he was promoted to the three star rank of Lieutenant General.

His many military awards and decorations include the Distinguished Service Medal, Silver Star, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation Medal, and three Air Medals.

A native of Charleroi, Pennsylvania, he earned both a Bachelor's Degree in Transportation and Traffic management and a Master's Degree in Business Administration (Operations Research) from Pennsylvania State University.

Mr. Pagonis is also a published author, Moving Mountains (Harvard Business School Press, 1992) is a study of leadership and an account of his experiences in the Gulf War.
