2016 William A. Patterson Transportation Lecture - Jeff Silver, CEO, Coyote Logistics

Speaker:  Jeff Silver, CEO of Coyote, A UPS Company

"No Excuses. Technology and culture meet a new era of expectation"

JEFF SILVER is the cofounder and chief executive officer of Chicago-based Coyote Logistics, one of the most innovative, fast-growing third-party logistics (3PL) service providers in North America. Under Silver's leadership, Coyote became a UPS subsidiary in 2015. Prior to founding Coyote in 2006, Silver transformed the 3PL industry in the 1980s and 1990s with American Backhaulers, the second-largest North American freight brokerage at the time.

Crain's Chicago Business named Silver to its 2015 Who's Who in Chicago Business for the fourth consecutive year. Silver was also recently named to the Supply &; Demand Chain Executive 2015 Pros to Know Awards for the third consecutive year.

Silver serves on the board of the Northwestern University Transportation Center (NUTC) and the MIT School of Engineering Dean's Advisory Council, and he is a member of the Economic Club of Chicago.

Full Bio:

Prior to founding Coyote in 2006, Jeff Silver worked at American Backhaulers (ABH), a company he joined in 1984 after graduating from the University of Michigan. Using a Rolodex and a pen and paper, he matched trucks with available loads by hand, a system that prompted him to write the truck-matching software that eventually grew ABH to be one of the largest freight brokerages in North America at the time. After ABH was sold to C.H. Robinson in 1999, Jeff took a five-year hiatus to pursue his MBA from the University of Michigan and a master of engineering in logistics from MIT. He had always known there was a need for a stronger service commitment in the industry, so in 2006, armed with industry experience and advanced education, Jeff and Chief People Officer Marianne Silver founded Coyote, a company that has been changing the industry and service expectations ever since.

Jeff was recently named to the Supply &; Demand Chain Executive 2015 Pros to Know Awards for the third consecutive year. In 2013 Chief Executive magazine named Silver the Mid-Market CEO Award winner in the Overall Excellence category, and in 2011 Ernst &; Young named him Entrepreneur of the Year in the Midwest category. Jeff serves on the board of the Northwestern University Transportation Center (NUTC) and the MIT School of Engineering Dean's Advisory Council, and he is a member of the Economic Club of Chicago.
Coyote provides truckload, less-than-truckload, and intermodal brokerage services for shippers and carriers and transportation management services to more than 14,000 shippers, from Fortune 100 companies to small businesses. Under Silver's leadership, Coyote became a UPS subsidiary in 2015.
