"Monitoring Health Condition of Transportation Infrastructure: A Multivariate Statistical Framework to Process Real-time Measurement Data"

Yikai Chen
PhD Candidate in Civil & Environment Engineering; Transportation Center Dissertation Year Fellow
Northwestern University

Recent advancement in wireless and computing technologies has made long-term health monitoring of transportation infrastructure widely accepted and it hence prompted the need for state-of-theart methods to process and interpret data. The primary goal is to ensure the longevity and safety of infrastructure as well as to optimize resource allocation.

In this talk, we discuss two statistical methods to analyze deterioration measurement data from multiple distresses. Kalman filter serves as a rigorous tool to capture measurement errors and provide a structured look into the underlying fatigue patterns. In addition, Shewhart control charts and Hotelling T-square control charts are investigated to identify and quantify condition changes driven by unexpected causes, with an aim to reach reliable assessment of potential risks on structural performance. Empirical studies from a highway bridge on the border of Wisconsin and Michigan make an illustrative case to demonstrate the capability of the methods.
